Dickinson County's roots lie in the mining and lumbering industries of the mid-to-late 19th century. Although there are no iron mines currently operating in the county, the wood products industry still provides significant employment. The Champion International Pulp and Paper Mill in Quinessec is the county's largest single private employer. The government and service sectors also provide a substantial share of local employment. The Iron Mountain-Kingsford area supports a strong industrial employment base and serves as the retail and service hub of the county. Dickinson County provides excellent access to markets in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota, and is also linked to the remainder of the U.P., the Midwest, and Canada via highway, rail, and air transportation.
